Bonanza of Boxing Day sporting action at Ballymena Academy

It’s already become established as one of the most eagerly-awaited days in the sporting calendar at Ballymena Academy.

December 26 has become synonymous in recent years at the Galgorm Road school with the annual rugby and hockey matches featuring current and past players.

Ballymena Academy will be a hive of activity this on Boxing Day morning, with the action extended this year to include multiple sporting events.

Ballymena Academy Old Pupils’ Association is proud to announce that for the first time on Boxing Day morning the Academy grounds will play host to a cross county running event, a cycling time trial and tennis as well as the annual rugby and hockey fixtures.

The highlight of the sporting morning for many is the opportunity to reminisce with familiar faces in the sixth form centre over some light refreshments when all the whistles have been blown.

Commenting on the planned activities current Old Pupils’ Association President Neil Johnston said; “We are delighted to have such a fantastic sporting offering this year and we would welcome any past pupils, current pupils or friends of the school to come along and get involved.

“Boxing Day will allow past pupils to enjoy the fantastic new sporting facilities which were opened earlier this year, the superb hockey pitches and tennis courts will play host to some of the activity.”

Registration for the cross country event which will take place in the school grounds at 9.30am.

There will be two categories, current pupils and past pupils, Santa costumes are optional.

The cycling event will be an 11 mile time trial with registration at 9.30am.

There will be two hockey matches, the immediate past pupils will play the current 1st XI, and a select under 30 team will play an over 30 team, both games pass back at 10am.

An over 23 side will play an under 23 side in the rugby fixture, with kick off at 10am.

There will not be a structured competition for the tennis event but interested players are welcome to come along and enjoy the new courts.
