Champion Orr what? Lisburn lad retains his Ulster title

He was crowned the Boy 3 44kg champion for the second year in a row.

And that, according to Lisburn Boxing Club Head Coach Martin Laverty, is a testament to how well he trains.

Laverty added: “Thomas fought a great fight as he overcame a much bigger opponent and showed his potential as a fantastic boxer. In my opinion, he will only get better as long as he stays focused.”

As the bell went for round one, Thomas’ taller opponent used his longer reach well as he kept Thomas at bay with some nice jabs.

As the round went on, Thomas was getting frustrated as he was finding it hard to get in due to his opponent’s longer reach. In round two, Thomas came out and began well, as he had started to use his jab and footwork to good effect.

He caught his man with some lovely jabs to the head and some powerful body shots, which had his man hurt.

As the round went on, Thomas began to step up a gear.

He had worked out his man and landed some hurtful hooks to the head as he pinned him to the ropes and controlled the fight only for the bell to come to his opponent’s rescue.

In round three, Thomas started as he finished the end of round two and quickly had his opponent on the back foot. The Lisburn lad punched him from one side of the ring to the other.

As Thomas slipped under a hook, he landed a left hook to the body followed by a right hook to the jaw and the ref jumped in to stop the fight.

Rightly so too, as blood was coming from his opponent’s mouth and it was clear to see he didn’t want to be there anymore.

And that was it. Thomas was crowned the champion once again.
