Kurt and Jason fly the flag for local boxing club

Canal Boxing Academy has produced Europe’s second highest ranked boxer after their 56kg bantamweight, Kurt Walker, reached the finals of the European Youth Championships.

Kurt was very unlucky in the final, putting up a super performance to go down on a split decision to Azerbijan’s Maamdov Nasraddin.

He had a great tournament, winning four fights en-route to the final, beating fighters from Italy, Holland, Bulgaria and Serbia.

His clubmate, 49kg flyweight Jason McKay, got proceedings off to a great start with a win over France’s Anthony Giminez, only to meet Ukraine’s Zamotayev Dmytro.

His competitor was a gold medal winer in last year’s world tournament.

Jason left it all in the ring but unfortunately went down in a very close contest. The Ukrainian went on to lift gold in the 38 nation European Championship.

Everybody connected with Canal Boxing Club would like to congratulate both fighters, who have done the city of Lisburn proud.

In other news the club has re-opened after the summer recess. Junior training takes place from 6.15-7.15pm with the seniors in the ring from 7.30pm to 8.45pm.
