Scorpion Boxing Club’s Lewis set to create history

Scorpion Boxing Club’s Lewis Napier will create his own piece of history on Friday 14th November when this talented young boxer becomes the first fighter to walk down the famous staircase in the ballroom at the Titanic Centre Belfast.

Lewis, a pupil at Dunluce school is taking part in a gala fight night which has been organised by the Belfast Beltway Boxing Project.

Lewis’ coach Alan ’Spike’ Martin commented: “Lewis will be the first boxer to walk down that staircase and although we are creating history by holding the first boxing tournament in the ballroom, he is creating his own as the first fighter to have the honour.

“Lewis is boxing very well at the moment and this is a brilliant experience for him. There are a couple of Commonwealth Games medallists and a European champion in the team and he has gained great experience from rubbing shoulders with them and getting to see how they prepare. He wouldn’t get that sort of experience anywhere else and its a big deal for both Lewis and for Scorpion Boxing Club to be involved in an event such as this.

“It is the most fantastic venue and on the night Lewis will come down one side of the staircase, his American opponent will come down the other side and then they will enter the ring which is a few feet from the base of the staircase. It will certainly be an impressive evening and hopefully Lewis will defeat his opponent who he met and beat when he was in the USA earlier this year.”

On Friday 10 boxers will compete against a strong team from Washington DC in what is fast becoming an eagerly awaited annual event in the boxing calendar. The Beltway Boxing Project is as much a cultural exchange as it is a sporting one. Kids from Northern Ireland have travelled to Washington seven times, with the USA boxers being here twice before. Alan Martin continued: “This promises to be a fantastic night’s entertainment with kids from Scorpion Ballymoney, Braid & All Saints Ballymena, Sacred Heart Newry, Holy Trinity Ligoniel, St Paul’s and St George’s in the City all being represented.” Local Football pundit Liam Beckett will be MC for the night and Chief matchmaker Brendan Lowe expects a top class night of boxing with the likes of Commonwealth Games medallist Sean Duffy, Irish Champions James McGivern, Caoimhin Hynes and Barry McReynolds all on display on what promises to be a real thriller
