It was the Professional’s Day at Banbridge Golf Club last Saturday and Jason Greenaway was most generous with his prizes and special incentives.

There is always something to make the course difficult and this time it was the greens. They had been sanded the previous Thursday and that made the putting a little more testing.

The winner, as it happened, missed a birdie putt on the ninth green from only six inches. He didn’t clean the sand off his golf ball and it only rolled two inches. It was a silly error but, thankfully, it didn’t upset him too much.

Who was the winner? It was none other than the happy-go-lucky Cecil Wilson. Playing off a handicap of 15, he shot a superb score of nett 62 and won the top prize by three shots.

Cecil is no stranger to the winner’s rostrum. We all remember him winning Cathal O’Neill’s Captains Prize back in 2011.

Cecil is one of the most popular players in the club and everyone was delighted with his latest success.

The runner-up was another legendary player, Joe Glass (14). Joe had a very commendable nett 65.

Young Rory McMullan (12) was third, also with a nett 65.

The best gross prize went to +2 handicapper, Jim Carvill. He shot a brilliant 71, only two over par.

Gerry McBrien (21) is in great form lately and he won the prize for best senior with a nett 66.

There was a lot of excitement at the long par three tenth hole. Jason was giving a dozen Srixon balls and £10 onto their account to anyone who hit the green with their tee shot. And there was an extra £60 if you managed to get a 2.

Nobody got a two but eight players hit the green. They were Gary McCormick, Andrew Cassells, John McDowell, Jim Matthews, Colin Wilton, Jonathan Ward, Gary McCartney and Bertie Barnes.

It was a super competition, thanks to our generous pro.
