Charity events take centre stage in local darts league

The charity chosen this year is the Northern Ireland Cancer for Kids Charity and two separate events run simultaneously with a blind 3-a-sides competition as well as the first of what is now going to be an annual Charity Ladies Cup.

With the sport of darts getting more and more popular and three teams this season having ladies play for them the first Ladies Charity Cup was up for grabs and it will definitely grow from strength to strength.

The first winner is Trojans player Liz McLaughlin. Eight ladies initially entered the field and saw some great ties with Liz McLaughlin starting her march to the title with victory of Martina Power.

Cherie Toland proved she will be an asset to the Stables with an impressive win over Crumlin’s Ciara Mulholland who has been playing competitive darts in the Antrim League for a number of years. Marion Breen playing her first competitive match was unfortunate to come up against the much more experienced Fiona McGuigan who has been playing regularly in both the Banbridge and Portadown leagues.

The last quarter final match seen Karen McErlene come out on top against Karen Miller.

Semi final number one saw the experience of Fiona come through as she beat Karen McErlene and her opponent was to be Liz as she beat Cherie in the second semi final, but with these two ladies throwing regularly in the Craigavon League it will surely be a match we will look forward to see many more times in the future.

The final proved just as entertaining as all the earlier matches and it was Liz who got the better of favourite Fiona to claim her first trophy of the season and Trojans captain Andy Fairbairn will now hope it inspires his team on for the remainder of the year .

The Blind 3-a-sides competition featured a total of 11 teams drawn together and after a great night it was the threesome of Stables players Michael Lamb, Peter Morris and Paddy Magill of the INF getting the better of Neil McCluskey, Shane Lennon and Seamy Tallon in the final.

The three victors will now take an early lead in the race for the Charity Cup.

With points being given for each of the four events played there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to try and lay claim to this piece of silverware.

This weeks see’s a return to league action and the Vintage know if they can better the result of the INF then they will finally be crowned champions.

This weeks fixtures are as follows: Eire Og v INF, Drumgor v Stables , Celtic v Trojans and the Vintage will take on Clann Eireann.
