Carrick don’t look back in Bangor ... or in Holywood

Two league wins at the weekend took Carrick joint-top of Ulster Bank League Section 1 at the halfway point, with six wins out of nine matches.

Carrick completed a league double over Bangor on Saturday thanks to a convincing 123-run win at Upritchard Park and rounded off the weekend with a comfortable 92-run success at Holywood.

The visitors lost three early wickets which left them struggling at 23 for 3 after 10 overs against Bangor. But fourth-wicket pair Jamie Holmes and Indrajeet Kamtekar came to the rescue with a superb 146-run partnership in the 30 overs that followed.

Holmes was first to go, caught behind for 77 scored off 89 balls and including seven fours and three sixes. Kamtekar saw the score past the 200-mark in the 46th over, before he was caught at cover for 78 with six boundaries.

Opening bowler Andy Nixon tore through the Carrick tail to finish with figures of 7 for 15 and leave Carrick all-out for 210 in the 50th over.

Bangor struggled against some accurate Carrick bowling and with dark clouds looming, Carrick were anxious to get the 20 overs required to constitute a game. After 18 overs, with Bangor on 48 for 3 monsoon conditions arrived. It soon cleared and within 30 minutes they were back on the field to finish the job.

It took Carrick just another 10 overs to do so as wickets tumbled and they were all out for only 82. Kamtekar, Richard Hood and Matthew Kernohan each took three wickets and Stephen Grant one, in a comprehensive win.

Carrick won by 123 runs (Match reduced to 47 overs, D/L par score 205)

n Michael Gilmour and Iain Parkhill took 32 runs off the first 10 overs against Holywood but then both fell in quick succession.

They were followed by Holmes and Kamtekar, leaving them in some trouble at 64 for 4 after 21 overs.

Ryan Eagleson (75) and Alex Haggan (64) led the recovery with an unbroken 153-run partnership for the fifth wicket. After some sensible battting the pair cut loose with five overs to go, smashing a series of fours and sixes to add a further 55 runs, making it 217 for 4 from 50 overs.

Holywood lost their first two wickets in Haggan and Hood’s opening overs and never recovered. They could only muster 125 giving Carrick a comprehensive win.
