CRICKET: Defeat for Academy against Saintfield

ACADEMY Cricket Club failed to get their Senior League Section 2 programme off to a winning start when they were defeated by Saintfield at the weekend.

When skipper Matthew Palmer won the toss, he elected to field at Castle Grounds, but his bowlers failed to deliver, allowing the visitors to post a challenging total of 192 for seven in their 50 overs.

All the wickets fell to medium-pace bowlers, with Michael Warke coming out tops with four for 61 off 10, while Johnny Irons, Stephen Fawcett and Andy Bell chipped in with one apiece.

David Greenlees opened the bowling and although he had no successes, he bowled ten economical overs, conceding only 20 runs.

In reply Academy scored 178 in 38.4 overs, thereby losing by 14 runs.

Andrew Magee was caught on the boundary going for his half-century, but nevertheless top-scored with 49, with other major contributions coming from Greenlees (36) and Philip Warke (35).

On Saturday Academy travel to Bangor for a league match.

The 2nd XI had no game, but on Saturday they start their Junior League Section 2 campaign with a home fixture against Bangor II.
