Mixed fortunes as Derriaghy win and lose last weekend

Derriaghy played two games in the Ulster Bank Section One last weekend winning one game and losing the other.

On Saturday at table toppers Lurgan the Queensway men fell 16 runs short of victory following a valiant attempt to chase down the 198 runs required.

In the Lurgan innings Mark Stinson 3 for 33, Matty Jennings 2 for 33 and Craig Lewis 2 for 44 were the chief wicket takers as the home side recovered well from a nervy start.

The visitors also lost early wickets but first Lewis and then Aphale made useful contributions before Andrew Kenny played his best innings of the season to date with a well constructed 73. However, after he was 7th out the remaining batsmen could not score the necessary runs and were finally dismissed for 182.

On Sunday at home it was a much easier game for Derriaghy against a poor Dundrum side that are languishing at the bottom of the league. The County Down men batted first and struggled from the start against hostile bowling from Craig Lewis 6 for 30 and Mark Stinson 3 for 37. After 21 overs they were all out for 75.

Derriaghy openers Peter Bell (35) and Ross Bailey (34) both remained not out as they knocked off the required runs in under 12 overs for an emphatic 10 wicket win.

During the week Derriaghy defeated Bangor in the semi final of the NCU T20 Trophy. The final of this 20 over competition will be held in Carrick against the home side on Thursday July 17 starting at 6pm. All support for the local side will be greatly appreciated as they attempt to win their first trophy of the season.

On Saturday the Seconds also recorded a win this time at home to Lurgan. Some early wayward bowling allowed the visitors to reach 214 for 9 when they made first use on a beautiful batting pitch.

Graham Hunter hit 64 while Travis Moorhead with 3 for 26 was the most successful bowler. The Derriaghy reply featured three solid and forceful innings of over 50. First Rob Cumins with 51 then Aaron Kinnin 55 followed by 65 from David Scott got their side through to a 5 wicket win.

Meanwhile the third XI lost out to Victoria Seconds in a close contest at Lurgan park by just 6 runs. Ross Mulholland was the main contributer with both bat and ball. He claimed 3 wickets when the home side batted first making 116 for 6 and then hit 50 runs but alas the remaining batsmen could only get their total to 110 before being all out.
