Matthew Palmer’s decision to put Armagh in at The Mall when he won the toss was fully vindicated, when the hosts were restricted to 105, scored in 33.5 overs.

David Greenlees returned the best bowling figures with 4 for 23, with support from Halbert (3 for 14), Rory Thompson (2 for 19) and Waqas Mohammed (1 for 16).

In reply, Academy knocked the required runs in 24.0 overs when they posted 108 for 2.

Halbert confirmed his all-rounder credentials when he scored 31, but Shields top-scored with 37 not-out (four fours), while Haskins was unbeaten on 19.

“With the long boundaries there was only one six in the match, and that was the final stroke, when Haskins cleared the ropes for the winning hit,” said Academy secretary, Jack Quinn.

Tomorrow Academy entertain Donacloney, who were relegated last season.

After receiving a bye in the first round of the Junior Cup, the Hydepark lads have been paired with Civil Service in round two, to be played on May 9.
