East Coast runners in local, national and international races

Larne-based East Coast Athletic Club has been well represented at local, national and international races.

Over one weekend, athletes competed in races in Belfast, Ballymena, Antrim, Snowdonia (Wales) and Dublin .

Seven members completed parkrun events across the province. In Ballymena, Murray Deller, Kelly Deller, Drew Girvin, Glenda Girvin and Paula Cosgrove all completed the weekly Ecos 5k time-trial.

Murray Deller was rewarded for his impressive run with a sub-20 minute finish, clocking 19:22, which was enough to claim second place.

Ever consistent performer Drew Girvin followed closely, crossing the line in a new personal best of 20:33 (7th place), while Paula Cosgrove continued her notable rise through the ranks with another personal best of 26:01 (10th place lady).

Glenda Girvin and Kelly Deller also ran well, with Glenda completing the course in 27:43 (15th place lady) and recent Glentathlon prize-winner Kelly in 28:45 (26th place lady).

Meanwhile, at the Waterworks parkrun in Belfast; Catherine Boyd enjoyed her first outing on the course with a 26:39 (16th placed lady) finish.

Catherine was supported by a number of Larne-based runners/volunteers who were assisting organisers with the event in preparation for the inaugural Larne parkrun on Saturday, November 9. Amanda Peoples completed an excellent day of ‘parkrunning’ for the club, notching up a new personal best of 23:49 to claim fifth place (in the ladies category) at the Antrim parkrun.

In Wales, Justin Maxwell joined hundreds of hardy competitors at the Snowdonia Marathon. The 26.2-mile race, which includes 1,800ft of ascents, was voted as the UK’s toughest marathon by Runners World magazine. Justin performed to his usual high standard to seal 13th place in 2:54:38.

On Monday, David Clarke, Andy Guy, Penny Lindsay and Ruth Kelly were in action at the Airtricity Dublin Marathon.
