East Coast’s Clements impresses at junior cross country event

Almost 100 junior athletes turned out for Race 2 of the East Coast AC Junior XC Series in Larne on Saturday.

Following on from the success of Race 1 two weeks ago, the event saw competitors take on a challenging but enjoyable 700m loop of the Curran Park with the number of laps being increased with each age category.

The ‘Mini’ age group kicked off proceedings and it was Race 1 winner Eimear Ward (East Coast AC) who once again celebrated victory, covering the route in 4:34 (1st). St Anthony’s Primary School pupil Kian McAllister produced one of the performances of the day to win the mini boys’ race in 4:20.

The 1, 400m minor girls’ race was won in impressive fashion by Hannah Clements (East Coast AC). Hannah led from start to finish, breaking the tape in 7:13.

A close minor boys’ race saw Charlie Patterson (Olderfleet PS) and East Coast AC duo Harry Plumb and Rhys McManus battle it out all the way. Patterson eventually moved clear to win in 6:40.

The final race of the day was the ‘mixed’ junior boys and girls’ 2,100m race.

Callum McIlroy (North Belfast Harriers) showed the same form that led him to victory at Sandy Bay a fortnight ago, as he claimed top spot in 10:01.

Up-and-coming star Kelly Patterson (Larne Grammar School) not only won the girls race in 10:46, but claimed second place overall.

Alan Lockington and his friend, William Saunderson, took part in their first duathlon at Bishopscourt race track on Sunday.

The race had 66 competitors who completed the two-mile run, 10-mile cycle and another two-mile run to the finish. Alan’s first run was completed in 14.07 and William’s in a fast 13.07.

Lockington completed his cycle in 30.47 while Saunderson clocked 31.52, which brought them both into their second transition together completing their last run both in 14.55 - a total time of 1:01.

On Sunday Larne AC’s Ian Brennan, David Noble and John Neill travelled to Dublin for the Raheny Five Mile race along with their running companions from East Antrim Harriers (EAH).

Noble was first to cross the line for Larne in 30.20, while Neill ran 32.04 and Brennan 34.48.

Amy Beggs and Eddie Finn took part in the first East Antrim marathon of 2015 on Sunday. Amy was second lady, while Eddie finished in 4:19.
