Around the grounds: Amateur League

A win at the Cregagh Sports Club on Saturday could have vaulted Barn United up to fourth place in Division 1A but instead it was home side, Orangefield Old Boys, knocked out of the Border last week by Mossley FC, who celebrated their first home league victory of the season. Theor win leaves Jim Pherson’s side now hovering fourth-from-bottom - just one point ahead of Downpatrick FC, who have five games in hand. Nicky Sharples got the Barn goal.

Meanwhile, there’s troubled times at Wellington Rec who, without new manager Colin O’Neill, were hit for six for the second successive Saturday - this time at home to Dundonald, who now rise up to third.

The Millbrook men had to play more than half the game with 10 men, and no goalkeeper, after Matthew Rice was sent off for conceding the penalty just before half-time, which saw Dundonald go off four up.

Graham Humphrys took over the custodial duties and pulled off a few useful saves, but had no chance as Dundonald added two more second-half goals, to end up 6-0 winners.

Up at Paisley Park, meanwhile, UUJ’s Steel and Sons Cup run came to an end, beaten 3-1 by Premier Division side Albert Foundry.

It meant, too, that there was no action at the Factory Grounds, as Nortel, originally scheduled to play Islandmagee, had no fixture.
