BLUES CRUISE THROUGH IN CUP

Banbridge Rangers travelled the short distance up the carriageway to Ferris Park in Dromore to take on the Amateurs in the opening round of the Irish Cup.

Both teams were looking to impose themselves early as in any derby and Rangers got off to a great start when Chris Chambers rose highest after 12 minutes to power home a header from a cross.

Banbridge Rangers looked more comfortable on the ball than their hosts and a couple of needless free kicks were conceeded by Dromore.

An inoucuous free kick on the right hand sideline from well over 30 yards out saw Ryan McIlroy whip the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0.

With three minutes until half time the Amateurs faced an uphill battle when Craig McVickers’ trickery saw him brought down for a penalty which was converted by Chambers.

Rangers ended the game as a contest on 49 minutes when captain Coly Cousins notched his seventh goal of the season with a composed finish.

Glenn Moffett and Jason Gourley entered the fray soon after and Willie Frazer rounded off another fine performance with a goal after another successful overlap from left back on 69 minutes with Wilton taking the assist.

With ten minutes to go right back Jeff McClure was in the right place at the right time to convert from close range after McIlroy picked Gourley out and he drilled low for McClure to make it 6-0.

Left winger Ryan McIlroy scored his second off the day on 84 minutes when his run was picked out by a cultured pass from Ryan Gregg.

This was a solid performance from Rangers who now host Glenavon Reserves at Cheney Park this Saturday at 2.30pm.
