The Portuguese frontman, who has bagged nine goals this year, will be ruled out of the Christmas Day showdown through suspension if the Gers aren’t lined up with a game this weekend.

Chines is due to serve a one-match ban after picking up five yellow cards.

The former Linfield player was expected to watch from the stands against former club Knockbreda this weekend but that game has been postponed, owing to their involvement in a rescheduled Intermediate Cup clash with Crusaders Reserves.

Carrick had contacted the Northern Ireland Football League in the hope that an alternative opponent could fill the void on Saturday, but the Times understands that unless there’s an eleventh-hour resolution they will be left kicking their heels.

“It would be unfortunate if Miguel misses out on the showpiece game, but that’s football and if we don’t get a replacement league game this weekend, he will have to sit it out. But that would also provide a big opportunity for someone else to come into the team,” said Rangers boss, Gary Haveron.

“As far as I know, PSNI will get first offer. But some of the teams involved are also playing postponed Intermediate Cup games this weekend, Dergview for example.”
