Coleraine PCSP launch Cage Sport

As part of the launch, a competition was run to encourage children to design a panel as part of the Cage Sport Art design which was also announced at the launch.

Winners of the art competition gathered at The Irish Society Primary School on Wednesday 24 April 2013, to see the winning designs and receive their prizes. Entrants were from local primary schools within the Borough, who were asked to submit and art design which would be part of the facility.

Special funding was given to Coleraine Policing and Community Safety partnership from the Department of Justice’s Criminal Confiscation Scheme.

This enabled the PCSP to purchase Coleraine’s very own Cage Sport equipment to encourage young people across the Borough to participate in healthy sports diversionary activities. The advantage of this equipment is that it is portable, compact and can be taken to a range of areas, offering a range of sports activities in specific locations where space might be limited. Coleraine PCSP will be working in conjunction with Leisure Services from Coleraine Borough Council to make the most of this facility.

Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sam Cole conveyed his gratitude, saying: “On behalf of the group I thank the Department of Justice for funding this project and convey a very special thanks to the creative efforts of all the primary school children who took part in the competition for the original design of the artwork.

“The designs were of a very impressive standard and we are here especially to recognise the efforts of all the entrants as well as to present the prizes to the winners. We are very much looking forward to seeing this sport facility appear in locations throughout the Coleraine Borough area.”

Sharon Burnett, Vice-chair of Coleraine PCSP added: “This equipment can be easily transported and assembled in small spaces throughout the Borough, making it possible to promote an interest in sport and promote healthy activity which has a big part to play in diverting young people away from anti-social behaviour.”
