Cowie double seals win for managerless Rec

Amateur League, Division 1B: There’s no news yet on the managerial vacancy at Wellington Rec although the Millbrook men were heartened when their run of four successive defeats came to a welcome end with Saturday’s 2-1 victory away to Ballywalter Rec.

Wellington are basically handling things amongst themselves at the moment. At East Belfast, it was Ellis Cahoon in charge, assisted by Graham Humphrys, who then also helped chairman and former manager Jeff Carmichael the following week against Ballynahinch Olympic.

On Saturday, it was the turn of Aaron Boyd from the second team and there were a few of the fringe players in first-team action for the first time, such as Pawson, Steele, Paisley and Doherty.

It was left to old faithful Craig Cowie (pictured), however, to bag a brace, both set up by new boy Colin Paisley, as the visitors took a two-goal lead, despite playing into the wind in the first half.

However, that wind was probably more of a hindrance than a help and after the break, too many passes were blown off course, although the managerless side looked comfortable enough until Ballywalter were tossed a lifeline; scoring from the spot after a rash challenge from keeper, Brendan Quinn.

With Rec tiring, Ballywalter squandered a good late chance to snatch a point – but the visitors held on for a welcome win.
