Dorrian, who had been in the job for nine months, said he resigned over a “difference of opinion with the Board”.

Speaking to the Times, he said: “I think I’ve lost four league matches as a coach and a manager and that’s out of 20-odd games. That’s not a bad record. The four I lost was against Carrick Rangers, Bangor Ards and Lurgan Celtic, which was a bad one for me. But I haven’t got a bad record at the club.

“I decided to go after a difference of opinion between myself and the Board on the way forward.”

The Championship 1 club announced his departure on Saturday afternoon with the following statement: “Manager David Dorrian has stepped down with the agreement of the club. We would like to wish David all the best for the future and thank him for all his work during his time as manager.”

Dorrian leaves Dixon Park with the team in tenth spot in the table, with 16 points from 12 outings. Ballyclare have lost just two games in the league this season.

The move has left some Reds fans bewildered. Long-time Comrades fan Tommy Streight wrote on Twitter: “What’s going on here?? One of our best players followed by the manager! Strange.”

Dorrian took over from Eddie Hill in March and consolidated their status in the second tier of the Northern Ireland Football League.

Ballyclare chairman Trevor McCann said Dorrian tendered his resignation on Saturday morning. He thanked the Carnmoney man for his endeavours and confirmed Stephen Hughes will take charge in the interim until a permanent manager is appointed. Hughes will be assisted by former player-boss Hill.
