Football: Cookstown RBL record comfortable cup victory

Castlestar came into this favourites as they are joint top of Division One. In a cup anything can happen and it was the underdogs Cookstown RBL who took the game by the scruff of the neck.

It was the RBL who were creating the opening chances and it was that big man Kelso who opened the scoring with one of his clinical finishes.

A beautiful move involving several RBL men saw Kelso on hand to fire Cookstown into the lead. Robbie Allen and Smith were ripping the Castlestar midfield to shreds.

McMenemey had a glorious chance to extend the lead only for the keeper to make a brilliant save. Mitchell and Simon Young were making surging runs on the flanks but several chances went a begging.

The second half started with the RBL taking control and at times you would have thought they were the leaders of Division One.

Richard McMenemey scored a rasping low shot on 55 minutes to extend the lead. With the RBL looking comfortable the referee gave a freekick to Castlestar.

Sure enough the Castlestar forward scored a beautiful kick giving Young no chance in goal.

The RBL were now a wee bit nervous and they settled themselves when McMenemey broke with the ball and was bearing down on goal and the big man unselfishly squared the ball to Allen who rattled the ball into the
net.

With only minutes left young Joel Wylie got himself on the score sheet when he guided a freekick into the net with his head. Cookstown ran out very comfortable winners.

This Saturday Cookstown RBL will play Belfast side Ballysillan at Beechway at 2pm.
