Glebe let in late equaliser against Wakehurst

GLEBE had a man sent off and three key personnel were injured in the second half before the home side let in a late equaliser against Wakehurst.

Glebe had taken the lead shortly after half time when Tommy Elder’s pinpoint cross was met by Ian Parkhill who headed in at the back post.

But in the 71st minute Rangers’ captain Ryan Marks was sent off following a second yellow card and just before the end Wakehurst’s Jason Paul snatched an equaliser.

Rangers manager Peter Cairns described the game to the Times as the classic “game of two halves”.

He said Wakehurst were the better team in the first half and he put that down to the stop-start nature of the football fixture list in recent weeks for Glebe.

Cairns says the lack of competitive action on a regular basis means his side has no opportunity to get a rhythm going but having said that although Wakehurst were on top in the first period, Glebe missed a penalty and had two efforts cleared off the line.

Glebe changed their game plan after half time and the effect was immediate as the home side took the lead. With that goal, Rangers’ were steadied and they started to take control of the game and when Elder sent another ball over Jackie Morrison hit the post with a header.

But the turning point was when Marks was sent off and Glebe also lost Elder, Parkhill and Adam McCart with injury worries although they are not believed to serious and they should be available when Glebe are next in competitive action. They have no game this weekend.

Glebe have signed Chris McIlwhinney from Coleraine-based Liverpool Supporters Club and he started on the bench against Wakehurst but is set to get a run-out in a friendly game against Coleraine at the Riada Stadium on Wednesday night (7.30pm).

Cairns is currently looking at a number of new faces and some are set to get a run-out in the friendly, although he is keeping the names close to his chest at the moment.

Coleraine have no match this weekend, so Glebe are hopeful the Bannsiders will bring a strong line-up to Ballymoney.
