Goals galore for ’Stute youths

The U10’s lost 5-0 to Maiden City, the U11’s went down 4-2 to Magherafelt Sky Blues Pumas, Maiden City Academy also beat the U11’s 7-1, the Under 14’s drew 1-1 with Dergview in a friendly and the Under 15’s lost their Northern Ireland Boys Cup second round tie going down 4-2 to Bloomfield, both the U13’s and 19’s matches were postponded.

This week the Under 14’s travel to Moyola on Friday to face Ballymena United Youth, on Saturday, the Under 10’s take on Portrush at Ballysally (KO 10,30am), the Under 13’s take on Warrenpoint Town at Mallusk (KO 12noon) and Colin Colhoun’s Under 19’s travel to Ards Youth (KO 2pm).

Institute’s U11’s had a tough challenge on Saturday with two games back to back with no breaks.

In the first game against Magherafelt Sky Blue Pumas, Institute started off very confident and were passing the ball well, G Simpson and E Berry did well up front.

A great pass from M Cooke to E Berry and he found G Simpson who slotted the ball in the net. The second goal came quick, a pass in from the left from R Gamble again found Simpson who took his shot at goal and scored helped in by their defender, then ’Stute dropped their guard which resulted in Magherafelt scoring two quick goals to equalise.

’Stute left Magherafelt open in the centre and they continued to press through our defence to score two more. Final score 4-2 to Magherafelt. The score does not reflect how ’Stute played and they didn’t deserve to lose.

In the second game started straight away against Maiden City Academy and the team knew this would be a hard match.

From the start ’Stute seemed strong and should have scored a few times. MCA quickly put two goals past R Boyd. C Berry and S Temple tried to stay strong at the back but great skill from Friel and Dixon for MCA helped create goals.

’Stute showed how tired they were getting and again left too much space in the centre to let MCA through to score and at 5-0 down Institute managed to get one back with a great finish from E Berry.

’Stute showed that their confidence had gone and the game finished 7-1 to MCA. Institute need to work harder together on the pitch, talk more, keep confident and keep strong to the final whistle and be more aware of what’s going on around them during the game.

Dergview U15...1

The Under 14’s took advantage of a rare weekend from scheduled games to follow up their Friday night Lads v Dads fun match to play against the older Dergview team in a friendly at Lisneal 3G.

It was a great opportunity for those returning from injury or illness to get some time under their belt as well as new players to stake a claim for a starting spot.

The Drumahoe side dominated the match despite being out muscled by a large Dergview side and should have won the match.

However there was an opportunity to try new systems of play and players in alternative positions so any positives were taken from the game.

’Stute took the lead from a fantastic strike half way through the first half as Waterstone strode onto a loose ball to bend a left footed effort into the top corner from 20 yards out.

The away side equalised mid-way through the second half with their only shot of note since the break. There were chances for ’Stute to regain the lead but it some good saves, lucky defensive breaks and narrow offsides prevented that.

The young ’Stute team travelled to Ballysally hoping to bounce back from last weeks defeat. In an evenly fought first half the both teams had a few chances and both keepers were playing well with Cameron Allen in nets for ’Stute making some fine saves.

Alex Boyd and David Lynch were playing really well and some good tackles by both of them kept Maiden City at bay.

Then some good play by Maiden City and they took the lead, ’Stute then missed a few chances through Harrison Lea and Luke Curry and went in only 1-0 down.

The second half started brightly for ’Stute and they were pushing for an equaliser then in a ten minute period ’Stute seemed to go to sleep and Maiden City scored four quick goals to make it 5-0.

To the Drumahoe side’s credit they woke up and had numerous chances to score through Callum McArthur and Luiz Boyd but unfortunately they could not score and the match ended 5-0 to Maiden City.
