Hughes happy with Gers’ display against Bangor

A home draw against another of the teams considered by most folk to be title contenders may seem at face value to have been two points dropped and, although he would accept that, Carrick Rangers manager Michael Hughes was not unhappy with his lot on Saturday.

“Do you know what? The performance was great, we played really well and I believe we dominated the match virtually from start to finish,” said Hughes after 2-2 draw with Bangor.

“We gave away two goals disappointingly, the first after giving away possession just about on the 18-yard line. Their second was also down to a mistake on our part. So they were both scores which could easily have been avoided.

“However, we played very well, showed character in recovering from the mistakes and coming from behind twice and we would have won the game had we not missed from the penalty spot.

“We knocked the ball around nicely, had by far the greater amount of possession and we looked more like the kind of team we want Carrick Rangers to be week on week.

“We made a few changes, as we had indicated would happen, and they paid off.

We introduced the two guys signed from Cliftonville, Ciaran Donaghy and Dermot McVeigh, had Ryan McCann playing in midfield. And we saw something of the class and quality of Abby Sanusi, who has terrific potential and scored a cracker of a goal from about 25 yards.

“So they are four great positives from Saturday and the future looks bright, especially with a few players – such as Gary Haveron, Anto Lagan and Conor McCloskey, getting very close to coming back from injury lay-offs.”
