It’s time to show some mettle, says Steele

Carrick keeper Simon Steele believes it’s time for the entire squad to dig in as the business end of the Championship 1 season gathers pace.

Rangers suffered a setback to their title hopes on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Dundela, and now Steele says resolve should be their watchword.

“Last week we all said that if we could win six from the last eight games we would be there or thereabouts. That hasn’t changed,” he said after Saturday’s match.

“It’s a disappointing result but Dundela still have to play other teams near the top as well, so I can see everybody else dropping points. It’s just a matter of us looking after ourselves.

“We don’t do things the easy way at Carrick; we’re in a hole and we’re going to have to dig ourselves out of it. If we can put a string of wins together then we are still in with a shout, there’s no doubt about it.”

The defeat leaves Carrick in second spot, but teams around them do have games in hand.

“We’re all really disappointed,” added Steele. “The gaffer expressed the importance of the game before kick-off and we all wanted the win badly. Effort-wise we put 100 per cent in, but maybe we lacked a bit of cutting edge up front.”
