Kee praises United after their sterling display

Kee felt Gary Simpson’s side were super through out, but he also believed his players did enough for the win and he was pleased that Darren McFadden along with Darren McCauley continued their scoring run.

“They had good vocal support and they gave everything that they possible could and credit to them,” stated Kee.

“Some of them were cramping up at the end but they did make it difficult for us.

“But apart from the last 15 minutes, I think we controlled a fair portion of the match.

“Marty (Gallagher) didn’t have a massive amount of saves to make although they did stretch us and they tried to stretch us but in fairness to them they got out of the blocks quick.

“We talked about game management before the game and we didn’t manage it at the start, they played with a high intensity and were fresh at the start of the game.

“Stephen Curry has played in an absolutely fantastic cross and Richard Lynch finished it well, so they deserved their lead early on.”

The Drumahoe man was also thrilled that not for the first time this season his players kept playing the free flowing style of game he wants, despite their poor start.

“I’m really pleased with the way we are sticking at it recently, we are now a team which is hard to beat, we have a lot of character in the changing room and it’s developing.

“The younger players have been exceptional, like McCauley again on Friday night was fantastic,

“McFadden has had a really good game, I was pleased with Gary Henderson’s contribution, Colm McLaughlin is another young player who has come on and they are all top, top young players, who are all going to play a big part for us in the Championship this season.”

Kee maintains that he and the coaching staff have to continue to remind McFadden, just how good a player he is and he believes if the big front man has similar confidence in his own ability then the skies the limit for him.

“When Darren plays with a wee bit of confidence, he’s super. He’s his own worst enemy but people can see the talent that he has got.

“He has great movement, great left foot, great ability, he takes the ball in tight areas and he has got a bit of everything, it’s just getting him up another level in terms of his game time and giving him the necessary skills and the belief that he has those skills.

“We feel he has those skills, but sometimes he doesn’t in fact we probably believe in him more than he does, but credit to him he has taken his goal really well. He didn’t have much space to manoeuvre but he got his shot away.”

The Institute gaffer was full of praise for on-loan keeper Corey Wilson, who produced a string of top saves to ensure United were always in the tie right up until the end and the Waterside keeper even managed to get into the box in the closing stages, but he was unable to equalise.

“Corey Wilson for them I thought was absolutely sensational,” insisted Kee.

“He made four or five saves to keep the score down and that’s what he needed to do.

“He’s at Newbuildings on a loan deal, which has been agreed verbally between myself and Gary Simpson, but if he keeps playing like that then obviously that will be good for us in the long run as well.”
