Local football round up

Lisburn Distillery Youth and Lower Maze Youth, two of the top under-16 teams, clash in the quarter finals of the Lisburn Junior Invitational Shield at Barbour Playing Fields on Saturday.

In quarter finals involving other local teams, Lisburn Youth play Windmill Youth and Hillsborough Boys meet Oxford Sunnyside Boys in the 12s.

Lisburn Youth under-13s play Portadown Youth and Hillsborough again clash with Sunnyside. The top two 14s, Lisburn Youth and Carrick are drawn together, while amazingly Hillsborough again play Sunnyside.

Hillsborough change to Shankill Juniors in the under-15s and Lisburn Youth play Ridgeway Rovers. Hillsborough have drawn Solway Stars in the under-17 section and Distillery play Newry.

Three South Antrim teams go through

Three South Antrim League teams won their second round County Antrim Junior Shield ties in a good day for the league.

Ballynafeigh YM caused the biggest surprise with a 4-3 win away to Saintfield AFC. Their goals were scored by Keith McCracken, Mark McFadden 2 and Dale Thompson. They led 3-1 at half-time.

Braniel YM were 3-1 winners at home to Carniny Amateurs with goals from Richard Hutton, Clarke Dempster and Thomas Sharpe.

Two goals from Johnny Jess gave Ballymacash YM a good 2-0 win away to Bloomfield II.

But, Warren YM lost 0-2 away to Suffolk Swifts and Sandy Row, 4-3 up minutes from time had two men sent off and lost 6-4 in extra time to St Oliver Plunkett. Sam Curry, Jim Hutton, Paul Hill and Stuart Smith were on target for Sandy Row.

DIVISION 1

Stranmillis surprise FC Utd

Stranmillis II surprised FC Utd Lisburn with a 3-2 win in Division 1 of the South Antrim League.

Down 0-2 FC came back with goals from Paddy Howe and Andy Dornan to level 2-2 but Stranmillis, whose scorers were Christopher Earls, Kevin Gallagher and Kayoan Disely, won 3-2.

Luke Eastwood, Jamie Mudd and Gary Brett were on target when First Lisburn beat Ballymacash YM II 3-2. Terry Houston and Brian McAllister scored for Ballymacash, who were a goal up, then 1-3 down before First survived a late onslaught.

Victoria Athletic v Belvoir FC II was off.

DIVISION 2

Glenavy III rock Cregagh

Glenavy III rocked Cregagh Wanderers with a 2-0 win in Division 2 of the South Antrim League.

Lambeg Rangers II just edged home 3-2 against Ballymacash YM III, whose goals came from Stevie Edgar and Myles Taylor.

Lisburn Athletic had a 2-0 win over FC Utd Lisburn II with Ben Mehaffey and Stephen McDonagh getting their goals.

Matches off here were Carrowdore YM v Braniel YM II and Clonduff YM II v Newtown Forest III.

IRONSIDE CUP

Clonduff shock Bloomfield III

New team in Division 1 of the South Antrim League, Clonduff YM, surprised Premier Division, Bloomfield III by winning 4-1 through goals from Johnny Bowes 2, Craig Martin and Dee Moore.

Ironside Cup holders, Glaston, eased past Division 1 leaders, South Antrim 6-0 with goals from Sean Armstrong 2, Jim Mullen, Tommy McNeill, Alan McDonald and Paddy Macklin.

Off in the Cup was Belvoir FC v Lambeg Rangers.

Lisburn Youth

U11’s

A good performance ended with a disappointing result for the U11’s. Lisburn dominated the play in both halves of the match and were hit by a sucker punch by a Lurgan breakaway goal a few minutes from the end.

Lisburn were back to form this week after a disappointing display last week, and although they lost the result doesn’t reflect how they played, the coaches could not be disappointed with the performance level and spirit applied by the team.

Several early chances by Taci, Craig, Morgan and Price went begging which would have given the game a different outlook. Good performances on the day worthy of a special mention came from Callum Burns and particularly James Morgan who produced a tireless shift and pieces of brilliance on the left wing.

U12’s

Lisburn Yth continued their 100% start to the season against a well organised Greenisland side who took the lead with a 25 yd wonder strike from their centre half to Youth behind for the first time this season but they responded well and got a quick equaliser through midfielder Tyler Bain.

On a very tight pitch, it took time to get their usual passing game going but they began to get some crosses into the box from Donnelly and Barr on the wings and it was only a matter of time before they added a second which came from the excellent Ross Hunter.

Once Lisburn got their noses in front there was no stopping them. Bailey McKeown added the third and with Ross Kelly and Tyler Bain controlling the midfield more goals came with Hunter to complete a great hat trick.

Just before half time Donnelly added youths next goal from a great cross by Oisin Barr. Lisburn made changes at half time and added 2 more with great work by Devlin creating for Miller and Hunter grabbing his fourth of the day. Greenisland got themselves a consolation goal just before the end but it was all round great team performance by the U12’s that was most pleasing for the coaches.

U13’s

Disappointing weekend for Lisburn Youth’s U13s. The boys played Hillsborough in an early kick off. Hillsborough started well grabbing a goal very early on. A brilliant penalty save from Lisburn’s debutant keeper Aiden Frazer was the highlight of the half for Lisburn but they conceded a couple more before the break.

The second half continued in a similar fashion and any chances created by Lisburn were saved by the excellent Hillsborough keeper. Ryan Jackson had a big penalty shout turned down when Lisburn began to get on top. However Hillsborough put the game out of sight with 2 more goals as Lisburn battled until the end.

U14’s

Lisburn Youth U14’s got a shock on Saturday morning at the Rec when a good Windmill team scored early and dominated the first half to go into the break with the lead. The game had barely kicked off when Windmill worked the ball down the left and a cross/shot ended up in top corner of the Lisburn net. Dominic McEnhill nodded in an equaliser from a Caoimhin McConnell free kick but Windmill went back down the other end to retake the lead. Windmill really should have been 3 or 4 goals ahead by half time and it was only good fortune that kept the score at 2-1.

The Lisburn coaches couldn’t believe what they had witnessed in the first half and a wake-up call was sounded to the team during half time. This seemed to have the required effect as Lisburn went out and levelled the game immediately after the break. McEnhill again with a cool finish from a Ross Hull through ball. Rhys Kelly and Cory Mann were brought on shortly after the equaliser and Lisburn began to get on top. Thomas McComb scored from distance to make it 3-2 and Caoimhin McConnell’s cross was deflected into the Windmill goal to make it 4-2. Windmill didn’t quit and got another goal but only after McEnhill completed his hat trick with another header to win it for Lisburn.

Blues Bus

The 1st Lisburn Blues supporters club will be running a bus from their Sackville Street clubrooms tomorrow (Saturday) to Linfield’s match against Ards.

Distillery Youth

There’s no stopping the Lisburn Distillery U-16s and U-17s as both teams maintained their 100% record and in doing so stayed top of their respective leagues. The U-16s had a comfortable 6-1 victory over Banbridge, Peter Freeland (2), Darius Barmak, Kyle McCleery, Daniel and an OG were the goalscorers. The U-17s looked to have a much tougher task with a game against second placed Hillsborough but goals from Rhys Grainger (2), Scott Hunter and Dalton Tate saw them run out comfortable 4-0 winners. The U-12s were also up against local rivals Hillsborough and the spoils were shared in an entertaining 4-4 draw, with the Whites goals coming from Carson Elliot (2), Lewis Smiley and Adam Hamilton. Gary Borelands U-15s got their season back on track when goals from Matt Fegan (2), Jack Boreland, Leon Young, Corey Geddis, Kyle Jones and Joshua Arthers saw them defeat Apex 7-1. The U-13s beat Carrick 3-1 but the U-14s went down 3-2 when faced by Annagh Utd. There are always plenty of goals at Stormont for the U-8s but Saturday’s game against Glentoran was a real goal fest for both teams, the Wee Whites goals coming from Dawson Jackson (14), Ryan Cressey (7) and Brandon Wright. The U-9s put up a superb display against Ardoyne, Jake Hull got himself another couple of goals with Dee Dee Rafferty, Mason Jess and Charlie Davidson also finding the net at St. Malachys. The U-10 Whites were also playing Ardoyne and Michael Rocks, Jack Bonar and Bradley White got goals in what was a close game. Spencer Maxwell was outstanding as the U-10s put in a really good performance in a very hard fought encounter with Linfield.
