Local players benefit from Peacock award

Cathal Connolly played centre midfield for the County Londonderry Under- 17 team and for the second successive year Cormac Lawlor, a full-back who also plays in midfield, made the final with County Antrim in the Junior event.

He is also a member of the Northern Ireland Schoolboys’ Victory Shield squad.

Both were winners of the Bertie Peacock Award at the international youth football tournament.

The presentation is made to the player selected as the best performer among the six Northern Ireland county teams competing in the Premier event and a similar award is made for the Junior competition.

The boys are pictured with their respective team managers, Damian McNamee (Co. Londonderry Premier team) and Stefan Seaton (County Antrim U-15s), together with Roger Dallas and Frankie Trainor, trustees of the Bertie Peacock Foundation and William Moore, from the University of Ulster who help administrate the award.

The nomination perpetuates the memory of one of the Milk Cup’s founding fathers, former Celtic captain and Northern Ireland international Bertie Peacock.

The award’s key benefits promote health and education among young people and the players will receive tuition in courses run at the University’s Jordanstown campus.
