The Lurgan Blues had hoped to secure the deal on Tuesday night, but Linfield boss David Jeffrey wanted to meet with McCaul one more time before finally agreeing to let the player move from Windsor Park.

McCaul can now play for Glenavon in the Irish Cup tie against Sport & Leisure on Saturday.

“We had agreed a fee with Linfield and it was just down to David having a talk with Brian,” said manager Gary Hamilton. “I’m thrilled to see Brian back at Glenavon. He made a big impression here during his loan spell.

The 22-year-old came to Mourneview Park on loan in January 2012 and almost single-handedly ensured their top flight survival. He netted 13 goals in 16 games and picked up the club’s Player of the Season and Top Goalscorer awards.

He had an impressive season at Windsor Park last term but has started only four league games for Linfield this season.
