McConnell admits club needs to ‘build again’

After last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Orangefield OB, Wellington Rec manager Graham McConnell acknowledged its probably just a ‘bridge too far’ in Division 1A, with his side still eight points adrift of third-bottom Barn United, who have three games in hand.

“I thought our defending and work rate deserved a point, but we never looked like scoring, and we’re not going to win matches if you don’t score,” he told the Times.

“We need to get players in, but I’m not going to go down the route of bringing them in from out of town. I think that’s the wrong way to go long-term. Wellington always had a good camaraderie and team spirit, we’re just in that position where we need to build the club again. But this season, with only nine matches left, it’s practically impossible for us now.”

Rec still have home and away fixtures against unbeaten Derriaghy Cricket Club and Downpatrick, as well as tricky trips to Rathfriland and Larne Tech.

They looked like holding out for a scoreless draw until Orangefield went on the march midway through the second half, confirming the three points with a second goal just before the close.

The other main news from the Wellington camp is that ex-St Comgall’s manager Davy McKendry is McConnell’s new assistant.

Tomorrow the Brookvale Park outfit face Rosario Youth Club.
