Mossley go top after win over Groomsport

It has been quite a while since Mossley were proudly perched at the top of any league table, so they’re going to enjoy being the current pace-setters in Division 1C.

However, they’re well aware it’s early days yet, especially considering Bangor Amateurs and Colin Valley both hover just two points adrift with two games in hand.

Mossley reached the summit thanks to Saturday’s two goal success at Groomsport.

“I can’t remember the last time I went down there and won,” said manager Garry Campbell. “Last season I lost 2-1 with Mossley and dropped points in a 2-2 draw when I was at 18th Newtownabbey OB earlier in the campaign. It’s not an easy place to go and this was their first league defeat of the season.

“But, even more pleasing, as an ex-goalkeeper, is the clean sheet - the first since I came back to the club.”

Groomsport looked lively in the opening quarter without really threatening, instead it was Mossley’s Lee Graham making it five goals in his last three games, accelerating onto Gareth McKinney’s incisive pass.

Strike partner Terry Lyness added his tuppence worth with Mossley’s second at the start of the second half.

The return of Kyle Harper added stability to the back four, where Kyle Crowe turned in a man of the match performance, further back than usual, at left-back.
