OPINION: Not too many tears shed over Larne's Cup exit

Another controversial penalty award turned the game against Ards on Saturday but there were not too many tears shed that the Intermediate Cup run was over.

After the match, Kevin Bradley told me: “The penalty decision was tough to take especially as we were on top. Out of the two games today was the first time we got the ball on the ground playing our game and I didn’t think they could deal with it.”

“I want to win every game but maybe being out of the cup will help us focus more on the league as we are still well in contention and all the boys are in good form and looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Both teams made numerous changes which, to me, indicated where the priorities lie. Compared to the league game, the Cup encounter was a dull affair.

Larne were the better team after the break but couldn’t turn their dominance into goals.

Other league results on Saturday saw the Invermen slip to fifth before Tuesday’s trip to Dixon Park. I think catching Ards might be a bridge too far, but second place is certainly within their grasp. It will, however, need a concentrated effort and the rub of the green along the way.
