Ports legend Clarke compares McFall to United's Ferguson

Clarke was back in town recently in the role of Dergview manager for an Intermediate Cup tie against Annagh United.

McFall, who is expected to exit Shamrock Park this summer after over 29 years in charge of the Ports, included Clarke on his teamsheet for around two decades.

“I would still be in touch with Ronnie and was speaking to him last week,” said Clarke. “If he does decide to move on from Portadown or retire it will be a massive change.

“Ronnie was brilliant to me and I really enjoyed playing under him, it will be an end of an era.

“Hopefully they can finish strong and it would be nice for him to go out on a high.

“Portadown have a good squad of players but underachieved and maybe some of the big names have not done the business Ronnie was expecting.

“You just don’t know what direction to go in as it is probably a gamble either way, younger or experienced.

“Hopefully, it can get the club back in the right direction.”
