Smyth happy with ‘perfect’ treble

DRUMAHOE striker Matthew Smyth is hoping to end what has been a frustrating season with a winner’s medal.

The talented front man, who’s looking to help Terry Martin’s side defeat Oakleaf Celtic in Saturday’s O’Bryan Cup final, helped himself to a hat-trick in last weekend’s semi-final success over Newtown Heath.

“I did it for Terry (Martin) and the boys, as I have had a rough season, but hopefully we can turn things around and get the win this Saturday,” he added.

“It would mean everything to everybody at the club if we do manage to win it, not just for the players but for Terry, Wesley and Murray.

“They have stuck with us all season even though the results weren’t going our way, so hopefully we can reward them with a bit of silverware this weekend.”

The ex-Institute youngster’s treble against Newtown Heath turned out to be the perfect hat-trick, one with his head, one with his left foot and one with his right foot.

“I might have scored the perfect hat-trick, but to be honest the first one just hit me, but I’ll take the other two.

“As I have said I haven’t had the best of seasons, but it was brilliant to score a hat-trick in the semi-final, hopefully I can keep it going in the final this Saturday and we can lift the trophy,” concluded Smyth.

As for Drumahoe gaffer Terry Martin he was thrilled for his striker.

“It has been a tough season for Matty, but we know that he’s a goalscorer and he proved that against Newtown Heath, I’m hoping he can do it again this weekend.

“Obviously Matty will get the headlines along with Richard Stewart because they scored the goals, but I felt the entire team played their part in the win.”

Martin also felt that goalkeeper Glenn Watson played a big part in the semi-final win, after he stepped into goals at the last minute.

“My two keepers were unavilable but having a nephew like Glenn signed he’s a useful player,” he added.

“He has played a few games out the field for us this season and he pulls us out when we are stuck, which is pretty often, and I felt he was super.”
