Things are looking up for the Bannsiders

IT may have been a long time coming but Oran Kearney hopes Coleraine’s first win in nine games is the catalyst required to get their season back on track again.

The victory over Ards not only brought the winless run to an end, but it also signalled the return to action of Stevie Lowry and Howard Beverland. The influential duo played their part in the win along with new signings Eugene Ferry, David McDaid and Stephen Dooley and the rest of the team to help bring a bleak mid-winter to an end.

“We have always maintained that we have had too many big players on the sidelines this season,” he said after the game.

“For everything that’s gone on in the last couple of months that brings it all home today. You need your best players on the pitch and when you have them it gives you the chance of winning games.

“I’ve always believed that when we were at a point in being able to get our main players back playing again and get a few new faces in then we would be a different team.

“I think that showed today in the manner of our performance overall.”

“I said to the lads before the game that today was not about how physical you can be or how fast you can run, it was about doing the right things in the right areas.

“It was a nervy day, but as I said credit goes to our lads they held their nerve and I think deservedly took all three points.”

Even though the Bannsiders suffered the loss of defender David Ogilby on the hour mark after he was dismissed for a challenge on William Faulkner it didn’t seem to effect them.

Lone striker Eoin Bradley put in an immense shift and scored the all important second goal from the penalty spot.

“Eoin put in a monstrous shift up there on his own and never allowed Ards to come forward because they were scared of what he could do to them on the break,” said Kearney.

“His physical strength and awareness at being able to bring other players in to the game was first class.

“Eoin is a player I would back in a high pressure situation like today with the penalty and to be honest I didn’t have many concerns with him stepping up to take it and so it proved.”
