Vanishing spray comes to Irish Premiership

It may have come into most football fans attention during last year’s World Cup in Brazil, but the referee’s vanishing spray will be used for the first time in the Danske Bank Premiership this weekend.

When the Premiership kicks off this Saturday, Irish League players will now literally have to stand in line.

The NIFL have confirmed that Premiership referees will be armed this season with the ‘vanishing spray’ that was used so successfully last year in Brazil.

This new initiative was actually tested several years ago at Windsor Park as the Argentinian developers first sought support from the IFA as a member of the International Football Association Board when FIFA were considering its approval.

“It can be difficult for referees to ensure that everyone stays where they should be at free-kicks,” said David Malcolm, Appointments Officer for the Premiership Referees.

“Referees can now draw a line with the spray to clearly show where defensive walls should line up and can also mark the position of the ball to prevent attacking teams trying to steal vital yards closer the to goal.”
