We have to kick on again says Lowry

It was a case of mixed of emotions for Stevie Lowry when he fired home the late winner against Crusaders on Friday night.

The midfielder was delighted to have secured the spoils for the Bannsiders, but frustration was also at the forefront of his mind both for his own and his club’s struggles this term.

Coleraine have toiled somewhat this season and Lowry had to endure a three month period on the sidelines after a kneee injury. But now he is back he is determined to put the record straight.

“It has been a very frustrating season for me personally having to sit out three months with injury,” he told Times Sport after the game.

“I’m just starting to get my fitness back now and I want to finish the season with a bang.”

Victory over the Crues was the first step in that big finish but Lowry was disappointed to find out it was Coleraine’s first in six over the Hatchetmen.

“That’s a bit disappointing and simply it’s not good enough for a club like Coleraine,” he said.

“I look at them as one of our rivals so for us not to have won against them in that length of time is not good enough.

“We are in a false position at the minute, don’t get me wrong it has been a bad season for us, but really we see our true position as being up there fighting it out with the likes of Crusaders for third and fourth spot.

“We have to kick on now and give us something to build on for next season. The guys who came in during the January window gave us a big boost and as I say it’s about finishing the season strongly now.

“It’s a real building process for next season because we really do need to kick on. I think we’re better than the teams in and around us, but we have to show it for the rest of this season and next.”

And with Lowry back in the goal routine there’s no reason why they can’t.

“I had a couple of other half chances in the game which I didn’t take, so I was pleased to get the winner,” he added.

“It was a good set from Davy (McDaid) and I managed to strike it well as soon as I hit it I knew it was in - it just hit the sweet spot.

“It was nice for us to score in the last 10 minutes and to be able to see it out against a good side. We really pushed on in the last 20 minutes and thankfully I managed to get the winner.”
