Friends’ end the athletics season with more success

In the Area final of the Year 9 girls athletics team competition, Friends’ girls finished 2nd to reach the finals of the contest.

Friends’ Year 9 athletics team were Rachel Barnes, Anna Neagle, Sophie Clarke, Sarah Ferris, Shannon Scott, Lauren Boomer and Lucy Stewart.

As a result of their individual performances in the shot and high jump, Rachel Barnes and Joshua Armstrong were selected for the District Year 9 team to compete in the inert district Championships.

At the weekend five Friends’ girls travelled to Tullamore to compete in the Irish Schools’ Athletics Championships. It was an exciting day with many records broken, such is the calibre of athletes at this event. All the girls performed with great distinction and are to be hugely congratulated.

Zoe Carruthers finished 4th in the Intermediate 3000m, then followed that five hours later with a 5th place in the 1500m.

Mollie Newell finished 5th in the Junior 200m with a season’s best time. Rachel Barnes finished 10th in the Junior shot. The day finished on a high when the Junior girls relay team produced their best performance of the season to win bronze. Third in Ireland is a terrific achievement. The Friends’ team were Niamh Porter, Mollie Newell, Rosie Henderson and Rachel Barnes.
