Gary wins final event of winter season at Raceview

The final 13-hole sweep competition of the winter season took place recently at Ballymena Golf Club and fine weather conditions produced superb scoring.

Gary McMullan led the way as he scored 34 points from his handicap allowance of a shot per hole.

Having scored four pars, three bogeys plus birdies at the seventh and ninth which equated to 26 points for the first nine holes.

Gary then completed his round wit ha bogey, double bogey, bogey, par sequence for a further eight points.

That was enough to win by one point from Brian Casey.

The 13-handicapper reached the fifth hole having scored a trio of pars plus a birdie on the par five third, only to have a non-event on the fifth.

The rest of his opening nine holes was played with two pars, a double bogey on the eighth but he birdied the ninth which gave him 24 points from the eight holes at which he scored.

He then finished with three bogeys plus a par at the last which was worth another nine points.

Category one was won by Sean McElroy (4) with a total of 31 points, having played the first nine holes in level par for 20 points from five pars, dropped shots at the second and sixths and birdies at the seventh and ninth.

The final four holes commenced with two birdies, followed by a birdie and dropped shot on the final hole.

All the category prizes were won with 31 point totals, the winner of the second being William Greer (9).

William played the opening nine holes in one over gross which converted into 23 points. He then added another eight points from the final four holes, despite a double bogey on the 11th and a further dropped shot on the 12th.

William McCartney (13) had the top score in the third category, despite a non-event at the par three 10th, that after scoring five pars plus four bogeys for 23 points on the first nine holes.

After that blank at the 10th, he finished with two bogeys plus a birdie on the final holes which boosted his total by four points alone.

The final category prize went to Eugene M Reid (14) whose total of 31 came via 24 points from the first nine holes, only to complete his round with double bogeys on the 10th and 12th and single bogeys on the 11th and final holes which yielded a further seven points to his total.
