Gold medals for Shannon and Owen in Limerick

Swimmers Shannon McNickle and Owen Pickett, both members of the Sixmile Sharks Special Olympics Club from Ballyclare, returned from the Special Olympics Ireland Games with gold medals.

Shannon, from Larne, won an individual gold medal in both the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle as well as bronze medal as part of a 4x25m relay team at the University of Limerick at the weekend.

Owen, who lives in Templepatrick, won an individual gold in the 50m freestyle and was fourth in the 25m freestyle. He won silver with the 4x25m relay team.

The pair were part of the Team Ulster aquatics squad which won 26 gold, 25 silver and nine bronze.

The Games are part of the Special Olympics programme leading to World Games in Los Angeles in 2015.
