This event, attracting most of the top playing professionals working in Ireland, as well as on occasion quite a few European Tour professionals and the occasional professional from England, has become a premier Pro-Am event in the Irish Golfing Calendar and was originally started by the former City of Derry Professional Michael Doherty in 1992.

The first winner of the City of Derry Pro-Am in 1992 was Phil Harrison and over the years, other well-known professionals have made their mark, most notably Damien McGrane on five occasions in 1996, 1998 when he shared the podium with Phil Harrison, 2002, 2010 and 2012.

Other well-known winners include David Jones in 1993, Brendan McGovern in 1999, Damien Mooney in 2004, David Mortimer in 2008 and local professional Michael McGeady in 2007.

Whilst the glory of the Pro-Am’s very much centred on the success or otherwise of the professionals taking part, the 44+ amateur teams always view their prospect of success in the same vein for the much coveted amateur prizes.

Their involvement has been crucial in making the City of Derry Pro-Am’s the great success they have been for now nearly a quarter of a century.

At the press launch on Tuesday, Mr Michael McCullough, COD Club Captain and Partner in McDaid McCullough Moore, one of the sponsoring companies, stated that his firm’s ethos of excellence is reflected in its association with quality events and that there was no greater quality golfing event in the North West.
