Father and son team up for big success at Roe Park GC

The Irish Open and sunny weather had Roe Park awash with golfers this week as huge numbers flocked to the resort keen to enjoy the excellent course conditions.

Glenn Nicholl was first on the board as he took victory in Thursday’s Club Stableford with an excellent score of 39 points.

Having taken some time off last year to get married amongst other things Glenn has been making up for lost time and will welcome his first win of the year.

Frank Boyd and Dr Trevor Thompson had solid rounds both scoring 38 points with Frank taking second place courtesy of a better back nine score.

Saturday saw a two-man Scramble sponsored by Alan Rankin Decorators and as always lots of members turned out to partake in the very popular format.

Ricky Cochrane and son Jamie proved to be a formidable partnership as they sealed victory with an excellent net score of 60.5.

The deadly duo of Alan Rankin and Derek Nicholl would have started hot favourites but came up a bit short albeit with an excellent round of 60.75 to seal second place. Another fine pairing in Martin McVeigh and Colin Harkin took third place finishing on 61.5.

Limavady United FC hosted an Open Day on Friday welcoming members and visitors alike with some fantastic prizes and a raffle on offer.

Organiser Neil Mullan will have been happy with the big turnout and especially so as he himself won the first prize.

As golfer of the year reaches the halfway point Kieran Berryman is showing no signs of letting up, extending his lead by another 15 points to 100. Andy Young is the nearest challenger on 59 with Stephen Boyd occupying third spot on 40 points.

The Roe Park Pierce Purcell team travelled to Antrim and the Allen Park golf course to face Royal Belfast hoping to progress to the last eight of the prestigious competition.

It was certainly worth the trip as they ousted their opposition 3.5 to 1.5 to win comfortably. They will now face Edenmore GC in the next round.

The Ulster Four Ball team were beaten in their second leg match at home to Spa GC who only needed half a point to progress.

Up next is captain’s day which will see captain Neville Martin welcome a huge turnout of members with fantastic prizes and gifts for all participants.

Roe Park will also be in action this week in the North West League as they travel to Greencastle defending a two-point lead.
