Golf: Big turnout for Faughan Valley’s popular President

On Saturday Faughan Valley Golf Club hosted John Huw Cleghorn’s President’s Day.

The weather conditions were not in favour for the early starters with some rain and blustery wind conditions, but didn’t affect the early scores, by mid morning the weather conditions changed with the wind dying down and the sun making an appearance.

The first two spots were decided on a BOT between Terry Dornan (18) and 20 handicapper Andrew Cooke both carding 42 points, with Terry having 23 on the back nine to take first spot, in third spot was Kenny Richmond (10 with 41 points.

The winner of the gross prize was Bernard Kelly (4) from Greencastle with 72 gross, the winner of the visitors prize was David McIvor (17) from City of Derry after he scored 31 points.

The front nine went to Richard Godfrey with 24 points, and the back nine was won by Michael Kelly with 24 points, the winner of the non-qualifiers prize was 10 handicapper Lee O’Connor with 42 points.

The longest drive was won by Andrew Craig whilst the winner of nearest the pin was in-form Bernard Kelly.

In the Ladies Category the winner of Presidents Day was Marion Sayers with 39 points playing off a handicap of 26.

In second spot was 29 handicapper Evelyn Smith with 35 points, and taking third was Kathleen Cooke with 34 points playing off a handicap of 26.

Meanwhile George Dunlop narrowly won Redcastle’s Club Confined Competition last weekend.

With the course in excellent condition and conditions warm and dry George scored an excellent 40 points to take first place on a break of tie. Billy Harkin took second place also with 40 points.
