Golfer John off to Poland for Transplant Games

Newtownabbey’s John McAleer is off to compete at this month’s European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in Poland.

A year ago, the avid golfer was playing the game he loves when he received a call to come for a kidney transplant. Since then he has been transplanted and is now looking forward to the championships in Krakow.

The oldest member of the Irish team, the Jordanstown man is set to compete in golf, darts singles, field ball throw and petanque doubles in the 70-79 age category of the competition.

He was receiving dialysis when he took part in the previous European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in Croatia in 2012 where he won a medal. Four years ago, he also claimed a podium finish in golf at the Dublin games.

This year’s competition runs from August 16 to 23.
