Good turnout despite conditions for Final’s Day at Rockmount GC

Last Sunday was final’s day at Rockmount Golf Club. The horrendous weather forecast did not deter the hearty who started early in the morning; whilst the conditions were testy it was not as bad as feared.

John McConnell and Daniel Rice contested the Killynure Cup. John won the match 3 & 2. The Killynure Shield was contested by Ciaran O’Hara and Stephen Young. This match went down to the last hole which Ciaran won to win the match 1 up. The medal winners had a stroke play competition to decide the overall Medal winner. The most recent Medal competition winner Paul Fee had the lowest round on the day to take the prize. Michael Stewart partnered by Peter Coffey and Mark Kyle partnered by Malcolm Foreman contested the Signs Express trophy. At nine Mark and Malcolm had opened a three hole lead but it all changed at the start of the second nine, Peter birdied ten to reduce the arrears. The match was decided at the sixteenth hole; Michael and Peter had reversed the three hole deficit to win 3 & 2.

On Saturday, the stableford competition was sponsored by Rockmount Enterprises. Eight handicapper Harry Greer scored a massive 43 points to win the competition by three shots from John Monteverde (16) who had 40 points. Harry also had the best gross score on the day 73.

In the low section (0-11) David McClure (9) was first with 39 points, in the mid-section (12-17) Andrew Holywood (15) was first with 38 points and the high section (18-28) was won by Eamon McKinney (21) also with 39 points. The gross prize went to Gregg Sterritt who was one shot worse than Harry with a two over par 74.

Autumn Open Week sponsored by Andrew Morris Golf and Copytext NI results: Saturday 7th September – Open Stroke, first Henry Moore (8), nett 66; second Stephen Young (17), nett 66; third was Jerry McWilliams (16), nett 67 and fourth was Malcolm Foreman (20), nett 67. The best gross on the day went to Garry Gilmore (10) with 77.

The Ladies Open Stroke on the same day was won by Jenny Bain. Sunday 8th September was Mixed Greensomes, Patricia McDonnell and Colin McClelland were first, Ian McKnight and Tina McCutcheon second and I Robinson and N McBride third.

Monday 9th September the Gents Seniors was won by Jim Hume (17) with 41 points beating Ivor Johnston (17) on count-back. The Ladies competition on the same day was a three ball scramble which was won by the team of Joni Chan, Joyce Millar and Elana Patterson.

Tuesday 10th September, Gents Open Stableford, first was Eamon Mulvenna (15) with 42 points David McCann (16) and Stephen Price (11) both scored 38 points with David finishing second by virtue of a better back nine. The gross prize went to Gavin McKenna.

This week’s stroke competition was sponsored by Emma McLaughlin from The Hair Parlour in Moira and it was Raymond Rodgers (14) who came through as the winner with a three shot advantage over his nearest competitor finishing on 58 net (72 gross). Raymond has been playing great golf recently and had just won The Wednesday Hat midweek with 39 pts. He didn’t get off to the best of starts, sitting at 3 over par after the first three holes. His back nine was much better and with birdies at the 16th and 18th, accompanied with four pars, he came in 8 under par.

Alwyn Sturgeon (13) and Gerry McDonald (21) both returned net scores of 61 but it was Alwyn who took the runner-up spot after the count-back. His back nine was superb, hitting no less than eight pars. Best Gross was won by Stephen Johnston.
