Greensomes victory for Young and Henry

Three points separated seven pairings at the finish of the Bridge Services Station sponsored Greensomes played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

At halfway the George Small/Norman Reid pairing held a one point advantage over Andrew Young and Steve Henry and Joel McNeilly and Paul McNeilly.

A further point back came the Trevor Fletcher/Colin Black and Mark Hamilton/Mark Dunlop pairings.

One and two points further behind came Gary Boyd and David Bamford and David McAleese and Cecil McAleese respectively.

With the help of two pars and two bogeys over the next four holes Fletcher and Black moved up to take a two point lead over Young/Henry, McNeilly/McNeilly and Small/Reid.

McAleese/McAleese and Boyd/Bamford were two further points behind but a point ahead of Hamilton and Dunlop who recorded their second ‘ding’ at the Fort after failing to score at the Niuc.

Up the Grove and the leadership changed yet again with Young and Henry taking over by one point from an unlucky Fletcher and Black who failed to register for the second time with a ‘ding’ at the Grove after also failing at the Niuc, McNeilly/McNeilly, Small/Reid and McAleese/McAleese.

Boyd/Bamford and Hamilton/Dunlop were still in contention another one and two points respectively further back.

Young and Henry finished par, bogey to take the Greensomes by one point.

Fletcher and Black were unable to overhaul the winners with a bogey/par finish and took second place.

In an exciting finish for the remaining places D.McAleese/C.McAleese (bogey/par), Boyd/Bamford (two pars), Hamilton/Dunlop who came late with a birdie/par finish and J.McNeilly/P.McNeilly (par/bogey) all finished together another point behind.

Third place went to D.McAleese and C.McAleese with a better back nine.

Boyd and Bamford claimed fourth place with a better back nine.

Fifth place went to Hamilton and Dunlop with a better back nine and the final place was taken by J.McNeilly and P.McNeilly.

Small and Reid finished with two bogeys a point behind the placings.

Galgorm Castle Golf Club was delighted to receive a new perpetual trophy in memory of one of the most significant figures in the club’s history.

The Bertie Gibson Memorial Cup perpetuates the memory of the man who was the first Captain of Galgorm Castle, when the club opened in 1997. He also held the position of Presdident between 2002-2007.

The trophy, which will be competed for for the first time on May 2, was presented to club captain Keith Dinsmore by Bertie’s son Alistair.
