Heywood still going strong and wins again

Ernie Heywood once again showed why is he is regarded as City of Derry Golf Club’s best player over the past 10 years by claiming the first of this seasons Thursday Opens.

Three dropped shots were cancelled out by birdies at the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 12th and 16th for an impressive 3 under par gross and 40 nett points.

A steady front nine of 18 points put Alan Simpson in a strong position going into the back nine, having played the first seven holes of the back nine in level par gross a costly double bogey at the 17th all but ended his chances of taking top spot.

It was a similar story for third placed Simon Swaby who recorded two blanks on his back nine which ultimately cost him the chance of finishing higher up the leaderboard.

There was a large turn our for Mr Martin McNulty’s Skippers Prize played in glorious weather at Prehen.

Winner on the day was the in-form Billy Acheson (24) who compiled a magnificent total of 44 points. Billy was three clear of Golfer of the Year, Rodney Smyth (21) with Aubrey Taylor (7) on 40 points in third place.

The front nine went to Alastair Crockett (12) after he scored 19 points and Conor McFadden (21) with 23 points won the back nine.

The Ted Pope Trophy will take place on Thursday, April 24, more details will follow.

Entries are now being taken in The Pro Shop for this Sunday’s Masters Team Scramble, any combination, over 13 holes competition, tee off is scheduled for 4pm.
