Hole in one delightfor David at Blaris

DAVID Mercer had a difficult decision to make last Saturday at Lisburn Golf Club.

He was all set to go to Druid’s Glen to celebrate his wife Deborah’s birthday but decided that an early start would give him time to join his brother John in the Lisburn Winter league.

After playing the first five holes indifferently, David hit a seven iron straight towards the flag at the short sixth. The brothers watched the ball land on the green and roll straight into the cup for David’s first ever hole in one. Unfortunately the excitement was too much for him and he failed to par any of the remaining holes. He arrived home in good time to fulfil his trip to Druid’s Glen.

David set out to achieve two ambitions in golf: win the Musgrave Cup and achieve a hole in one. He won the Musgrave Cup a few years ago and having achieved a hole in one will now have to set himself new targets.

Andrew Gibb (18) was last week’s top scorer in the Winter League with 23 points. He won Section 3 by one point from Roy Welsh (14) with David Phelan (18) third on 21.

A handicap reduction did not prevent Chris Furfey (20) from winning Section 4 with 22 points, one ahead of George McMullen (24) and Ray Lockhart (28). George’s better finish secured second place.

Michael McCaughan (8) won Section 1 with 20 points. Michael Leathem (6) was second on 19 with Lewis Patmore (6) third on 18.

Terry Smith (14) and Joe McCullough (13) tied at the top of Section 2 with Terry getting the verdict on count back. John Wallwin (11) finished third a point behind.
