Hood emerges victorious in JP Corry competition at Galgorm Castle

Four players were involved in a very close finish to the JP Corry sponsored Stableford played at Galgorm Castle.

The four players – Tony Cheuk, Amarnath Dan, Gary Hood and Owen Smith – all ended up with the same score.

At halfway, 16 handicapper Tony Cheuk held a three point lead over Gary Hood (17), Owen Smith (10) and Amarnath Dan (21). Cheuk and Dan were still vying for the lead going to the 17th tee with Smith and Hood only one point behind.

Cheuk finished with two bogeys; Dan had a double bogey at 17 and a par at 18 to finish level with Cheuk. O.Smith (two pars) and Hood

(par, bogey) joined Cheuk and Dan for a four-wat tie and with a better back six, Hood was the Overall Winner with Owen Smith (better back

nine) Runner-up. Cheuk won Division 3 and Dan won Division 4. Smith’s round included 16 pars and a birdie.

In Division 1 at the turn Lyle Foster (8) held a one point advantage from Colin Steele (4) followed by Steven Penney (03) a further two

points behind.Over the next four holes Steele with two pars and two birdies opened up a three point gap over Foster with Penney (four pars)

another two points down.

Steele continued to par the next three holes but Foster with a bogey, par and a birdie closed the gap to two points with Penney (two pars and a birdie) still another two points down.

Foster after parring the seventeenth took a one point lead when Steele ‘dinged’ the hole with Penney (par) three points behind the leader.

Foster bogeyed the last which allowed Steele with a birdie to take first place by one point with Penney (par) unable to make an impact two points away.

After the front nine in Division 2 Ivan Alexander (15) had a clear three point lead over Keith Clements (14) who was another point ahead of Graham Simms (15) and Colin Gray (12).

Alexander continued to lead to thirteen where Clements with a birdie took a one point lead.

Gray and Simms were another one and two points respectively behind Alexander. Through sixteen Clements increased his lead to two points

over new challenger Gray. Alexander was another point behind with Simms a further two points adrift.

A bogey and a par saw Clements home to win by three points. Gray (two bogeys), Alexander (double bogey, par) and Simms with a late run of two pars finished together and with a better back six Simms finished second.

In Division 3 Stuart Gamble (16) finished two points ahead of Reginald McDowell (18) to take second place two points behind the winner Tony

Cheuk (see previously).

There was little between Gamble and McDowell throughout with Gamble two points ahead at halfway.

They were level after twelve but Gamble with a run of three pars opened up a three point advantage. Gamble ‘dinged’ sixteen and McDowell closed the gap to one point with two to play. A two par finish saw Gamble take second place two points ahead of McDowell (bogey, par).

Colin Orr (21), Graham Murray (27), William Kennedy (21) and Alan Collie (21) were left to play for second place in Division 4 as Amarnath Dan had already won first place (see previously).

At halfway Collie led Orr by one point followed by Kennedy and Murray at three and five points respectively further down.

After thirteen Collie had increaded his lead over Orr to three points followed closely by Kennedy and Orr one point behind.

A ‘ding’ at sixteen by Collie and he was joined by Orr and Kennedy. Murray was another two points behind at this stage. Collie finished double bogey, bogey- and was joined by Kennedy (bogey, double bogey) and Murray (par, double bogey) but they were unable to prevent Orr (two bogey) from claiming second place one point ahead but three points behind Dan.

Michael Reid (-1) won the Gross Prize with 39 pts and David Mudd the Seniors with 42 pts.

LADIES

Beth Moore represented Galgorm Castle on Tuesday 27th August at Massereene Golf Club in the Mary Peters trust and was the winner of the competition. This is an excellent result for Beth.

Also congratulations to the Galgorm Ladies team who reached the semi finals of the Junior Cup, they were narrowly beaten by Royal Armagh. This competition is made up of players who play off 9 – 15. They had previously beaten Spa, Ardglass and Ballybofey Golf Clubs. .
