Lisburn are in the driving seat in Ulster Cup tie

Team captain Chris Budd was very satisfied with Lisburn’s 5–2 Ulster Cup victory over Castleblayney at the weekend.

In damp, wintry conditions, Lisburn won the top two matches thanks to Brian Rainey and Ian Suffern.

Brian was always ahead of the Castleblayney team captain Jimmy Lacey and won four and two. Ian made a great comeback from three down after eight holes.

He squared the match and watched his opponent almost hole-out from over 100 yards to snatch a half at the 14th. Ian won the 16th to go one ahead and held his advantage to the finish.

Gary Hewitt was up against an in-form opponent and lost on the 15th green. The ever reliable Brian Houston, though, was four ahead at the turn and won on the 14th green.

Colin Hill was one ahead on the final tee. After finding the green with his tee shot, he watched his opponent duff his shot. He hit a magnificent recovery and almost holed out for a three. That meane Colin had done enough to win the hole and the match two up.

Andy Neill was three ahead at the turn. He halved the 10th but lost the next two. After winning 14 and 15, he secured victory with a half on the 16th.

Ryan Chambers was playing one of Castleblayney’s top competitors who was undefeated in this year’s competition. Ryan lost on the 14th green.

The team now look forward to playing Castleblayney on the fantastic Concra Wood course requiring 2.5 points for victory.

SAM RUTHERFORD

Team captain Des Kerr was happy after his Sam Rutherford team defeated Silverwood by three holes in the away leg of the semi-final clash.

Randal Kernaghan and Andy Parr, David Armstrong and Mark Jamison won their matches by two holes. David McCallister and Ian Suffern halved their match while Simon Ingram and Gary Hamill lost by one hole.
