Lost Boy Dave romps to 40 point victory at Shandon Golf Club outing

Shandon has been a regular feature for the Lost Boys schedule and always produces the goods in terms of quality golf.

In conditions nigh on perfect, the red of the Lost Boys flooded the putting green and first tee.

First out in matchplay, saw Craig Eggie Anderson taking on the stalwart of the Lost Boys, Richard Cowan, much chat pre match on facebook about who would come out on top, as they left down the first, couldn’t separate them.

That match would eventually yield the first matchplay win of the day, Eggie putting Richie to the sword winning 7 & 5. Well done Eggie!

Next up was the battle of the Andy’s, Andrew David Marks versus Andrew Parr, both solid golfers off low handicaps, this tussle ebbed and flowed and with Andy Parr 3 up on back 9, the job looked complete only for the past Captain to start a relentless fightback to go down the 18th all square and clinch the win on the 18th green. Andy marches on into the next round, well done.

The closest to the pin challenge came at the Par 3 10th hole, a deceiving hole down over a small stream, short enough at 125yds, club selection critical.

The marker was set at a around 8ft by Richard Coburn, when in the group following, Conor Downey, struggling on the front 9 to get the rhythm going, pinged a superb shot which pitched and brushed the edge of hole before landing barely a foot away. A shot that despite best efforts of others, especially Dave Humphries, coming off 25 points front 9 could not be mastered. That shot kick started Conor’s round on the back 9 and he scooped the monthly Closest to the Pin award.

Longest drive was set at the challenging 16th, with a fairway with slight right to left slant. Conor Downey hit a monster drive to land this prize also and complete the double on the day.

Drama on the 15th, as David Sterritt rattled a shot to within a whisker of a hole of one, the Chief could hardly contain himself with excitement at this superb shot, only to be tempered when his playing partners reminded him that he was shooting 3 off the tee following his reload....got a feeling this story will run and run for a while yet.

All players safely back to base and the sanctuary of a cool drink on the balcony at Shandon. Calculators out and tallying complete, saw strong scoring in mid-30s from healthy number, Stuart McCartney, Paul English and Conor Downey all returning 36 points, only to be bettered by Dave Humphries with a whopping 40 points, 25 gathered on outward 9.

A presentation was made to Dave, including a 4 ball voucher for Concrawood and the handicap committee seen sharpening their scissors to shouts of ‘get him cut’. Well deserved win for Dave, great golf on front 9, including 1 over par after 6.

Next outing is Spa GC on Sunday 19th July, with Captains Day taking place at Portmarnock Links over the weekend of Saturday 14th August.
