Major Finals weekend joy at Roe Park Golf Club

Huge numbers turned out at Roe Park to enjoy the continuing good weather and for some, to take part in the Major Finals weekend.

Up first was the Individual versus Par competition which saw members attempt to beat the course in a matchplay format.

Conor McKay set the standard for the day with an excellent round beating the course by 5 holes.

Derek Nicholl also won by 5 holes and took the victory due to losing fewer holes. Conor had to settle for second place with Stephen Boyd taking third place beating the course by 3 holes.

A Club Stableford on Saturday was won by Declan Quigley with a superb score of 42 points. Ashley Henry carried on his fine form of late claiming second place with 39 points. Willie Scott took third and Dr Trevor Thompson won the best gross.

Saturday also saw the first of the Major Finals in the form of the George Walker Monthly Medal Final.

Kevin Boyd and Joe Connor played exceptionally well to both record a nett score of 69 with Kevin ultimately taking the victory on countback.

The Major Finals continued on Sunday with Andy Young and Conor Kelly fighting it out for the Ross McMullan Scratch Matchplay Trophy.

It certainly proved to be an exciting match as Conor won the first three holes only for Andy to come back and level it up before the turn.

Birdies were flying in at every hole and the lead kept changing hands as both went into the final hole all square. A loose shot from Andy meant a par was good enough for Conor to take the victory.

The George McKeever Singles Matchplay Trophy was won by John Holmes in another exciting match beating Martin McVeigh 1 up. Colin Harkin and Phillip McKeever contested the Nelson McGonagle Seniors Matchplay Trophy with Colin winning by 3&2.

amon Butcher partnered Lady Captain Ann O’Kane in the Malcolm Stuart Mixed Foursomes Final against Martin Rafferty and Mary McCloskey. Martin and Mary eventually running out 3&2 winners.

This coming weekend also sees the start of the Ryder Cup and Roe Park will be seeing in the final day with a Shotgun Start four-man Scramble sponsored by Benedicts of Belfast Hotel.

There will also be a Club Strokeplay competition sponsored by Martin, King, French & Ingram Solicitors.
